PETER SCHUSTER

Chemie

Geboren am 7. März 1941 in Wien. 1959 bis 1967 Studium der Chemie und der Physik in Wien. Promotion sub auspiciis Praesidentis rei publicae. 1971 Habilitation in Theoretischer Chemie in Wien. 1968/1969 Postdoc in Göttingen. Seit 1973 (mit 32 Jahren) ordentlicher Universitätsprofessor für Theoretische Chemie an der Universität Wien. 1992 bis 1995 Gründungsdirektor des Instituts für Molekulare Biotechnologie in Jena. Seit 1991 externes Mitglied des Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico. 2000 bis 2003 Vizepräsident, 2006 bis 2009 Präsident der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Seit 2009 Mitglied der National Academy of Sciences USA.
Herausgeber und Mitherausgeber zahlreicher Zeitschriften.

Zu Peter Schusters zentralen Forschungsgebieten gehört die molekulare Evolutionstheorie, was ihn in die erste Reihe international renommierter Forscher in dem rasch aufstrebenden Gebiet zwischen Chemie und Biologie brachte. Seit zwanzig Jahren zählen zu seinen Interessen auch eine strukturbezogene Bioinformatik von Ribonukleinsäuren und ihre Rolle in der Computer gestützten Systembiologie. Schuster setzt sich seit Jahren für eine Forschungspolitik ein, die Exzellenz und internationale Vernetzung in den Vordergrund stellt.
