Born on March 23, 1942, in Munich. Initially worked as a TV dramaturge and editor, as well as a theater director. In 1973, he made his first television film, “...und was kommt danach?” (And What Comes Next?), followed by other television productions. In 1989, his first feature film, “Der siebente Kontinent” (The Seventh Continent), was produced. In 2006, he staged his first opera, Mozart's “Don Giovanni,” at the Opéra Garnier in Paris, followed by “Cosi fan tutte” in Madrid and Brussels in 2013. Since 2002, Michael Haneke has been teaching directing at the Vienna Film Academy of the University of Music and Performing Arts. In 2012, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Paris VIII, in 2013 from the Faculty of Theology at the University of Graz, and in 2015 from the Film School in Lódz.
Michael Haneke has received numerous national and international awards for his directing work, including two Golden Palms at Cannes, a César, a BAFTA Award, a European Film Award, a Bavarian Film Award, and a Golden Globe. Michael Haneke won countless awards for his feature film “Amour,” including five Oscar nominations, the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, and a Golden Globe. His feature film “The White Ribbon” also won a Golden Globe Award in 2010 and was nominated for an Oscar. In 2015, Haneke was awarded the German Metropolis Prize for his life's work.
