WOLF D. PRIX

Architect [Chair 2014-2025]

Born on December 13, 1942, in Vienna. Studied at the Vienna University of Technology, in London, and in Los Angeles. Visiting professor at the Architectural Association in London in 1972, 1986, and 1988, and at Harvard University in 1990. Adjunct professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles from 1985 to 1995. From 1993 to 2011, he was Professor of Architectural Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and from 2003 to 2012, he was a member of the board at the Institute of Architecture, head of Studio Prix, and vice-rector of the university. Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2001. Honorary doctorate from the Universidad de Palermo, Buenos Aires, in 2001, and from Ion Mincu University Bucharest in 2014.

Wolf D. Prix is a member of the Austrian Federal Chamber of Architects and Consulting Engineers, the Association of German Architects (BDA), the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture (FAIA). In 2006, he was commissioner for the Austrian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In 1968, he founded Coop Himmelb(l)au together with Helmut Swiczinsky and Michael Holzer.

Wolf D. Prix is one of the outstanding representatives of architectural deconstructivism.

A century after the era of Viennese architecture around Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos, he, alongside Hans Hollein, has once again helped the extremely dense Austrian architecture scene gain international recognition. His idiosyncratic architectural language has an expressive gesture that exaggerates the consumer icons of the 20th and early 21st century.
