PETER SLOTERDIJK

Philosopher / Author

Born on July 26, 1947, in Karlsruhe. He studied philosophy, history, and German language and literature in Munich and Hamburg from 1968 to 1974. Among his first works in the early 1970s was his essay “Michel Foucault's Structural Theory of History.” His 1976 doctoral thesis, entitled “Literature and Organization of Life Experience,” dealt with autobiographies from the Weimar Republic. From 1978 to 1980, he stayed at a Bhagwan center in India. His work “Critique of Cynical Reason” was published in 1983. It had an immediate impact on discourse and contributed to a broader public awareness of philosophy. The work is one of the best-selling philosophical books of the 20th century.

Since 1988, he has held several chairs, and in 1993 he took over the Institute for Cultural Philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts on Schillerplatz in Vienna, where he became a contract professor in 2001. In the same year until 2015, Sloterdijk was rector of the State Academy of Design in Karlsruhe and professor of philosophy and aesthetics. In 2011, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Peter Sloterdijk is probably the most controversial contemporary German philosopher. He places his idiosyncratic, often risky interpretations of contemporary phenomena not only in the philosophical tradition (in order to rethink them), but also in the continuity of rites and parables. That is why his book “Gottes Eifer” (God's Zeal) concludes with a reinterpretation of Lessing's Ring Parable.
